Following the crisis that bedeviled the election of 2020/2025 Senate Representatives on the Joint Council/Senate Joint Selection Board for the appointment of the 13th Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has directed that the election be re-conducted.
The election, which was conducted electronically on Monday September 21, 2020, had the former Dean of The Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba and former Head of Department, Mathematics, Professor Ezekiel Olusola Ayoola as the winners out of nine contestants.
According to the information gathered, the Senate of the institution, in an Emergency Meeting held today (Tuesday November 24, 2020), resolved to re-conduct the election tomorrow (Wednesday November 25, 2020).
The Senate also resolved that the election would no longer be conducted electronically, but manually where electorates would appear physically to cast their votes.
The Decision Extract signed by the Deputy Registrar (Senate, Administration and Affiliated Institutions), Morenike A. Afolabi confirmed this development.
It read in parts:
“There was a Special meeting of Senate on Tuesday, 24 November, 2020 at 2:00pm in the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
“Consequent upon the directive of the Federal Ministry of Education, that a fresh election of Senate Representatives on the Joint Council/Senate Selection Board for the appointment of Vice Chancellor be conducted. Senate at its Special meeting decided that a manual election be held on Wednesday, 25 November, 2020 between 10:00am and 3:00pm. The election will take place in Trenchard Hall.
“Senate also requested the Registrar to provide the following documents to members in preparation for the election: updated Senate list and list of proposers and seconders of nominees”
Sequel to this, the Deputy Registrar in a notice of meeting dated November 24, 2020, announced that Senate would hold another Special Meeting at 3pm tomorrow (Wednesday 25, 2020) in Trenchard Hall.
According to the notice, “The Meeting is convened to announce the result of the election of Senate Representatives on the Joint Council/Senate Board for the appointment of Vice Chancellor, scheduled for the same day”.
“Kindly note that manual voting will start at 10am and end 3pm, after which the Special Meeting will commence”, the notice added.
PrimeStarNews reliably gathered that if things go as planned, a new Vice Chancellor of the institution may emerge on Thursday November 26, 2020.
