As the process of selecting the 13th Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Ibadan (UI) reaches its final stage with the Selection Board meeting today to pick the VC, there is currently a crisis on the premises of the Premier University.
Some people believed to be members of the non-academic staff of the institution, this morning, showed their displeasure to the six shortlisted candidates claiming that their preferred candidates were not picked.
The six shortlisted candidates are five Professors from the University, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, Prof. Olusegun Ademowo, Prof. Ebenezer Farombi, Prof. Abideen Aderinto, Prof. Babatunde Salako and Prof. Femi Mimiko from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU).
PrimeStarNews gathered that some of the aggrieved staff went to the council chamber where the selection board members were meeting brandishing brooms and disrupted the proceeding, insisting on being addressed by the chairman of the Governing council.
The five-man screening panel is headed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Nde Joshua Waklek.
Other members of the panel are two external representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, Sir Ben Okoronkwo and Dr Uchena Uba.
The two elected representatives of the Senate in the screening committee are Prof. Ezekiel Ayoola and Prof. Peter Olapegba.
A member of Council was said to have attempted to calm their nerves but they refused to heed his appeal.
As at the time of filing this report, the aggrieved staff have locked the University gate and barricaded the entrances preventing motorists and visitors from entering the University.
