Uganda’s main opposition candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has spoken from house arrest the Ugandan dictatorial President, Yoweri Museveni, has placed him, saying that he would not stop struggling for freedom from Museveni because 45 million Ugandans are demanding for genuine change.
It will be recalled that shortly after Bobi Wine cast his vote at the just concluded general election on Thursday January 14, 2021, President Museveni placed him and his entire household on house arrest.
A detachment of deadly and heavily armed soldiers and policemen were stationed in his area to ensure that no one goes out of his house or comes in.
Journalists have also been barred from having access to him.
Also, on the instruction of President Museveni, members of the main opposition party and their loyalists have been arrested and currently incarcerated. The party offices of the opposition are being routinely searched.
Speaking on what is motivating him to keep fighting, Bobi Wine said, “The main motivation for us to keep doing what we are doing in the face of all these intimidations is because what we are doing is moral and what we are doing is right. We are fighting for our rights and we are doing this morally. We are doing this legally. We are doing this non-violently”.
He said, “And we know while we have the luxury of being detained in our own home, many of our colleagues are in unknown destinations. Our entire campaign team is in prison.. They are being charged with trumped up cases while others are on the run. That alone keep us going knowing that by getting freedom for ourselves, we will be getting freedom for everybody else. And also, knowing that people that fight for a just cause have not failed in history. Therefore, when we continue standing for what we stand for, we will be able to overcome. Many people are paying the price for standing for what is moral, for standing for what is right and that alone motivate me not to give up because giving up on a cause so just and a cause so moral and a cause so human, it will be betrayal for the 45 million Ugandans that are yearning for change, peaceful change”.
“And also knowing that we have an entire generation standing with us and yearning for change and, yes, agreeing that non-violent, moral actions can actually change our lives for ever and can be able to reshape our country and redefine us as a generation , as members of international community, as members of human family. That is motivation alone for me to keep me struggling. And I am very very happy that my wife has also accepted to stand the pain along with me and that motivates me too”.
