In a keenly contested election at the University of Ibadan (UI) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Adefemi Afolabi of the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine, has emerged as the winner of the chairmanship position with 507 votes, defeating Dr Olusola Omoregie of the Department of Education, Faculty of Education, who polled 307 votes.
Consequently, Afolabi will succeed the outgoing ASUU-UI chairman, Professor Ayo Akinwole of the Department of Aquaculture Engineering and Water Resources Management.
Dr Tayo Ajibade of the Department of Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry emerged as the Vice Chairman, polling 498 votes to defeat his rival, Dr Akewula Olufemi of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, who garnered 304 votes.
Dr Garuba O. Emmanuel of the Department of Microbiology polled 475 votes to defeat Dr Moses Adetona of the Department of Anatomy, who garnered 328 votes, for the position of Secretary. Meanwhile, Dr Dumen Otulubu of Kenneth Dike Library scored 804 votes to emerge as Assistant Secretary.
Also, Dr Sarah Akintola of the Department of Petroleum Engineering, who scored 514 votes, defeated Dr Hellen Alabi of the Department of Chemistry, who polled 278 votes, for the position of Financial Secretary.
Dr Ishola Salami of the Department of Early Childhood and Educational Foundation secured 666 votes, Dr Abayomi Ige of the Department of Physiology polled 647 votes, and Ekoi Edem of the Department of Industrial & Production Engineering garnered 651 votes, to clinch the positions of Internal Auditor, Welfare Officer, and Investment Officer, respectively. The trio emerged unopposed for the positions they contested.
