Residents of Akobo Axis of Ibadan, capital of Oyo State, are mobilizing to join the ongoing ENDSARS protests by the Nigerian Youth on Monday, October 19, 2020.
The protesters have been calling for the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigeria Police, stoppage of police brutality, as well as calling for good governance in the country.
According to a flyer in circulation, the residents who are to converge at NIPCO filling station, Akobo-Ojunrin, are protesting against police brutality, calling for the reform of the police, among other things.
A resident of the area who spoke with our reporter said the people in the area are fed up with the state of the country. Apart from what they face from the police, he said the state of infrastructure in the area is appalling.
He stated, “Look at the road from General Gas to Olorunda, it is so bad that a lot of cars have been destroyed plying that road. People use to fall from okada (commercial motorcycles) and get injured. It seems the government does not care about us. Electricity tariff was increased, there is high level of insecurity. We are just having a peaceful protest to let government know how we are feeling in this area”.
