The Ibadan zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Thursday November 12, 2020, condemned the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka for the organisation of the ongoing 2020 convocation and 72nd Foundation ceremonies of the University of Ibadan (UI).
The Union, in a release issued and signed by the Zonal Coordinator of the Union, Professor Ade Adejumo said that the resolve of the outgoing VC to hold the convocation ceremonies was mischievous and divisive.
Others chairmen of other universities who signed the released are: Prof Moyosore Ajao ASUU, UNILORIN, Prof Ayoola Akinwole ASUU, UI; Dr. Biodun Olaniran – ASUU, LAUTECH Dr. Femi Abanikanda ASUU,UNIOSUN and Dr. Dauda Adeshola ASUU, KWASU.
The Ibadan Zone of ASUU comprises of the University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Osun State University and Kwara State University.
The Union, therefore, condemned the move by the UI VC and reiterates the position of ASUU National that the on-going strike is total and comprehensive, adding that the stand of Professor Olayinka was a strategy to create acrimony among member of the Union in the Premier University.
The Ibadan Zone of ASUU stated that, as a united body, the members are currently struggling to reposition and revitalise the public universities in order to make them competitive universally.
Adejumo maintained that the failure of the Vice Chancellor of the nation’s Premier University to ask for waiver from the Union to conduct the convocation implied that his intention was to break the Union.
