The management of the University of Ibadan (UI), has put on hold the meeting of the Appointments and Promotions Committee for Academic Staff scheduled to hold between Monday 24 to Wednesday 26 August, 2020 aimed at considering the pending promotion of about 150 academic staff.
The Institution’s outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka today revealed this to PrimeStarNews.
Olayinka, in a chat said that he felt sorry for his colleagues, whose promotion ought to have been announced for a while but could not because of the nationwide strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), for the revamp of the public Universities.
Olayinka stated that his administration is so concerned about the welfare of staff but at times, his hands are firmly tied to do the needful for the staff, pointing out that he looked forward to see a seamless system.
H said, “In spite of the current lockdown and ASUU National Strike, we are alive to our responsibility to our colleagues by flagging off the 2019 promotion exercise for all categories of staff. Indeed, I had attempted to convene a three day meeting of the Appointments and Promotions Committee for Academic Staff to hold from 24th to 26th August 2020 in order to consider the pending promotion of nearly 150 of our colleagues. However, I was prevailed upon by the Deans of Faculties to shelve that meeting on account of the ASUU National Strike and as a democrat, who leads from the front, I yielded to their demand”.
He urged the incoming VC to make the staff and students welfare, especially promotion, topmost priority.
