The University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has condemned the “purported removal” of the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Toyin Ogundipe.
In a statement signed by the Union’s Chairman, Dr Dele Ashiru, the union described the removal of Ogundipe as illegal and uncalled for, saying that it is the plan of the Pro-Chancellor, Dr Wale Babalakin, to destabilise the university.
According to the statement, Section 17 of the University of Lagos Act (as amended) unambiguously provides the procedure for the removal of a Vice Chancellor.
It read, “Our Union, therefore, condemns, in the strongest terms, this illegal, recless and destructive action by the Pro-Chancellor, Dr Wale Babalakin”.
The Union said it reaffirm its confidence in the leadership of Professor Toyin Ogindipe as the Vice-Chancellor of the university.”
