The body of Justice Azuka, the member representing Onitsha North 1 Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, has been discovered by security operatives near the Second Niger Bridge.
Azuka, a chieftain of the Labour Party, was kidnapped on December 24, 2024, while returning home for Christmas along Ugwunaobankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha. Reports say he was abducted at gunpoint in a swift operation that lasted under five minutes.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the discovery of his lifeless body on Thursday. Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the command, stated that a joint security team, including the police and AVG operatives, found the decomposing body during a routine patrol.
“In the early hours of today, February 6, 2025, at the Second Niger Bridge, the joint security team on a mission to rescue Hon. Azuka unfortunately found his lifeless body,” Ikenga said. “As soon as I have more details, I will keep you updated. The team has taken control of the scene, and an operation is ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the crime.”
Azuka had recently reclaimed his seat in the House of Assembly after a court ruling annulled the victory of Douglas Egbuna of the Peoples Democratic Party, who was initially declared the winner of the 2023 election.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lawmaker’s death, with hopes of identifying the kidnappers and bringing them to justice.
