Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) President, Cesar Salinas, died on Sunday at the age of 58.
No details were given of his death, however local media reported that he was placed in intensive care on Thursday after being diagnosed with COVID-19.
Salinas had chaired the FBF since 2018.
Bolivian first division club The Strongest said that Salinas and his wife, Ines Quispe, had tested positive for the virus.
“With immense sadness, the Bolivian Football Federation regrets to announce the untimely passing of our president,” read an FBF statement.
“His contribution to Bolivian football will be remembered, as will his undoubted human qualities as a father, husband and friend.”
Alejandro Dominguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), said via twitter, “It is with much pain that I got the news of the passing of my friend Cesar Salinas, president of the Bolivian Football Federation.
“Cesar was a man who was committed to the sport and he leaves us a legacy of dedication and hard work to the development of Bolivian and South American football.”
