There is a strong indication that President Muhammadu Buhari has endorsed the Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawal as the Presidential Candidate for All Progressive Congress (APC) in the forthcoming Presidential Election.
According to a report from Westernport, the National Chairman of the Party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu has announced the Senate President, as the party’s consensus candidate.
It was gathered that Adamu announced this at the meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC), on Monday, June 6, 2022, in Abuja.
Other Presidential aspirants which include Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Engr. David Umahi and others will be allowed to contest the primary election at the convention scheduled to hold on Tuesday, May 7, 2022 at the Eagle Square, Abuja.
The NWC members insisted other aspirants must be given a level playing ground to compete.
Adamu’s adoption of Lawan as a consensus candidate is against the position of 11 APC northern governors who endorsed that power must shift to the South after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.
Adamu told the party NWC that he arrived at the choice of Lawan after consultation with President Buhari.
However, the Northern governors elected on the platform of APC have insisted that they would back a southerner to emerge as the presidential candidate of the ruling party.
In a related development, Kola Abiola, the eldest son of late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, the winner of the 1993 Presidential Election has clinched the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) ticket to contest the 2023 presidential election.
