Ex-Nigerian international, Daniel Owefin Amokachi, has been appointed as the Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Sports.
In his letter of appointment dated August 17, 2020, and signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, it was stated, “I am pleased to inform you that Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has approved your appointment as Special Assistant on Sports. The appointment takes effect from August 11, 2020.”
It would be recalled that President Buhari had in February appointed Amokachi as Nigeria’s Football Ambassador.
Amokachi was born in Kaduna on December 30 1972 to Ikwulechin Amokachi who hails from Otukpa in Ogbadibo Local Government Area. Amokachi aka “The Bull” came to national limelight in 1988 when he broke into the first team at Ranchers Bees FC of Kaduna in the second half of the 1988 Nigeria Division One League Football season.
He has also played for Club Brugge of Belgium, Besiktas of Turkey, Everton of England and Colorado Rapids. He played in three World Cup finals, won a Gold medal at Atlanta 1996 Olympics, won two African Cup of Nations cup as both player and Assistant Coach, to late Stephen Keshi, Austin Eguavoen, Samson Siasia, and Lars Largerback.
