A notable Nigerian gospel artist, Bunmi Akinnaanu-Adeoye, has shared a glimpse of her challenging life journey, which she described as deeply emotional and heartbreaking.
Speaking in Yoruba on social media about her struggles during an informal interview, Bunmi revealed the extent of her hardships, painting a vivid picture of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
She said “If you hear my story, you will weep along with me. I don’t like to grant interviews because if I do, it will get to a point where the interviewer, the interviewee, and even the cameraman will all break down and cry. My story is very bad.”
She recounted moments of extreme poverty that defined her early years, which she did not allow to define her, sharing how she wore rags and bathroom slippers to church services on Sundays.
Revealing a never-before-told aspect of her life, Bunmi spoke about the challenges she faced while recording one of her hit songs, Ibere Nla, from her Omije Ojumi album, produced by Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) adding that every piece of clothing and jewellery she wore in the song music video was borrowed.
“All the clothes I wore in the song Ibere Nla were borrowed,” she confessed. “If you watch the video, the blue-black iro and buba I wore was a trendy outfit at the time, but it wasn’t mine. In fact, if you look closely, another person wore it in the video among the dancers.”
The singer also recounted how the earrings she used in the video came with a high-stakes condition. “The person I borrowed them from was also in the video, standing behind me. She kept warning me, ‘If you lose it, you are dead.’ At one point, the earring fell, and she stylishly signaled me to pick it up quickly because it must not get lost.”
Bunmi’s story is a testament to the resilience and perseverance that has defined her journey to success. Today, she is celebrated for her powerful voice and inspirational songs that touch the hearts of many. Her narrative serves as an encouragement to countless individuals facing their own challenges, reminding them that perseverance and faith can lead to transformation and triumph.
