Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, capital of Oyo State on Tuesday October 12, 2021 convicted and sentenced Shoneye Idowu Segun, a student of Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, to one year imprisonment for involving in cybercrime.
Pronouncing his judgement, Justice Uche Agomoh noted that the accused was guilty of the offence Economic and Finance Crime Commission (EFCC) arraigned him for.
According to the court, Idowu, a Marketing Student in OGUNTECH pointed out that the crime he committed contravenes section 33 (2) (b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015 and punishable under Section 33 (2) (c) of the same Act.
His conviction and subsequent sentence came after he pleaded ‘guilty’ to one-count charge bordering on impersonation.
The one count pressed against him read, “That you Shoneye Idowu Segun sometimes in 2020 at Ilaro within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fraudulently impersonated the name – Anna Balogun from Texas, United States of America with intent to gain advantage for yourself and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 22 (2) (b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015 and punishable under Section 22 (2) (b) of the same Act”.
In view of his plea of ‘guilty’, prosecution counsel, Sanusi Galadanchi reviewed the facts of the case and urged the court to convict and sentence Shoneye accordingly. Justice Agomoh ordered him to pay restitution of $475 as well as forfeiting his iPhone 11Pro Max and one iPhone wrist watch to the federal government of Nigeria
