Frank Geng-Quangrong, a 47-year-old Chinese man, who killed his 22-year-old girlfriend, Ummukalthuum Buhari last year has been sentenced to death by hanging by the Kano State High Court.
Geng committed the offence on September 16, 2022, at about 9.30 p.m. He attacked Ummukalthuum with a knife after a misunderstanding.
The police said that Ummukalthuum was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano where she was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
Geng denied killing her intentionally and pleaded with Justice Sunusi Ado Ma’aji of the Kano State High Court to temper justice with mercy.
During the proceeding in court, the defendant who was living in Railway Quarters Kano and charged with one count of culpable homicide, claimed that he unintentionally stabbed Ummukulsum on that fateful day.
He said, “Ummukulsum attacked me with a knife, while I was defending myself she bit me on my arm and finger and also injured me in my groin area.”
Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji, who presided over the case, in his judgment said, “The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent. I hereby find him guilty.”
The judge, however, recommended mercy to the state governor who will sign the death warrant saying, “I hereby recommend mercy by the Kano State Governor on behalf of the convict.”
