As churches prepare to be reopened and hold services tomorrow in Oyo State, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has recorded 45 new cases of Coronavirus in the State, bringing the total number of cases to 809.
According to the Centre, 519 patients are currently on admission, 281 treated and discharged and nine deaths recorded.
Giving the break down of the 45 new cases, Governor Seyi Makinde wrote on Twitter: “The COVID-19 confirmation tests for forty-five suspected cases came back POSITIVE. The cases are from Ibadan SE (12), Oluyole (8), Ibadan SW (5), Egbeda (5), Ido (3), Ibadan NE (3), Ibadan N (2), Lagelu (2), Saki West (2), Ona Ara (2) and Ibadan NW (1) Local Government Areas”.
However, in the social media, opinions are divided over the opening of schools and churches as there are arguments for and against the decision by the state government.
Some of the reactions:
*Dr.G The Frontliner @iamSwaga01 – “We are resuming all workers, opening up schools and churches, despite increasing number of positive cases in the state, especially in Ibadan. Mr Seyi, the COVID committee in the state need to really involve science in their decision making. We need stricter measures to curb this”.
*Okey-Agu @RealOkeyAgu – “It’s useless locking down and killing the economy in the 1st place because nothing has changed”.
*Owolabi Olatunji @tunjow – “Im not happy with putting all this together all at once. Oyo state is just waking up, trying to control it’s cases”.
*mikemabi @FabulousMikee – “Your excellency… 68 new cases in Oyo State! And you’re reopening”.
*Someone’s mum @Dapperdebbie – Exactly bro. I don’t agree with reopening of any where. It’s just the governor is always playing the good guy game. Even during the so called lock down, taxi drivers were doing what they like, market was packed as usual, tutorial centers were full of students. E. B. Things”.
*James Alaba Alabi @jamesAalabi – “I’ve often consistently maintained that the Oyo state governor can’t continue to play the ‘good man’ stuff for whatever reasons. More than ever before, one expects stricter measures to curb this menace, but the leadership hierarchy thinks otherwise. I hope it doesn’t boomerang”.
*Ebenezer Tobi @Rt_Hon_Tobi – “Lol. If we want to go by your statement, we would all stay home through out this year. If the pandemic continues, life should move on”.
*Owolabi Olatunji @tunjow – “Much has changed! Figures on the increase. If the borders are manned and strict measures in place against interstate movement, the situation will not be getting this bad! People are also playing bad roles. We are now 6th position in Nigeria! Are we aiming high?”
*ishaaqjamiu @ishaaq2013 – Dolla$ @dollypazo – “68 cases in a day!!! Reopening schools and worship centres should not be in the talks now to be very honest”.
*Moyòsólú @_M_and_E_ “I hope we have heard of the resurgency of COVID-19 in Beijing, China. They have to lockdown again after weeks of no cases. I hope we are not making a mistake by opening up so soon, especially when cases are increasing. Sixty-Eight is the highest so far in Oyo, I guess”.
