Cristiano Ronaldo has become the second male player to score 100 international goals with the first of his two strikes in Portugal’s 2-0 Nations League victory over Sweden on Tuesday, September 8 2020, with the second goal taking him to 101 international goals.
Ronaldo sits second in the all-time list of leading international scorers behind Iran’s Ali Daei, who scored 109 in his career. Daei, who played for Bayern Munich and Hertha Berlin at club level, featured for Iran from 1993 to his retirement in 2007.
Ronaldo scored his first international goal in the 2004 Euros opener against Greece, scoring a consolation goal in injury time as the hosts lost 2-1.
He would score again in the semi-final against Netherlands but was powerless to stop Greece winning against them again in the final.
The former Manchester United winger became his country’s all time top scorer against Cameroon in a friendly in 2014, after a hat-trick in the World Cup qualifier a few months before had put him level with Pauleta on 47.
His three goals at the 2016 Euros earned him the silver boot and helped Portugal win the tournament, though his contribution in the final was as cheerleader and coach, after he went off injured early against France.
