The Management of Bowen University, a Faith based university own by the Nigerian Baptist Convention, has stated how a 200 level student of the College of Management and Social Sciences, died in the school, contrary to the narrative of the students.
Some students of the institution revealed that the deceased, whose name is yet to be revealed by the school authority said that he was stabbed by a cultist for impregnating his girl friend.
The Deceased
Investigation revealed that one Stanley, a spill over student stabbed the deceased at the abdominal region, the incident that was claimed to have happened around the school chapel.
A student said, “Yesterday a student was stabbed close to the chapel in BOWEN university and he died!! A school that isn’t well equipped. the nurses can’t even speak English. they send extremely sick and contagious people back to their hostel.”
While some people feel that the institution will do everything possible to sweep this under the carpet, an alumni of the school write, “A student was stabbed and strangled in a private & faith based institution. It is crystal clear that Bowen University has failed in its primary duty to ensure security of students on campus. The school should be closed down indefinitely. I’m ashamed to be an Alumnus.”
In a circular to all staff and students signed by the institution’s Registrar, B. T. Adetona and dated Wednesday, January 23, 2025, the school described the loss as tragic.
The school said that the death was a result of his collapsing and hitting his head against the pavement.
The circular reads, “At approximately 8:20pm, a member of staff and some students on their way to the hostel discovered the student running towards the staff quarters, where he suddenly collapsed and hit his head against the pavement. Upon closer inspection, it was evident that he had sustained a wound in his abdominal region prior to the fall. The university’s security officers stationed near the power sub-station and the generator house/staff quarters reported that they neither saw nor heard any sign of an altercation during this time.”
“The student was immediately rushed to the university hospital by ambulance. Upon further examination, the medical team, led by the Director of Health Services, discovered additional bruises around his neck, indicative of a struggle or defensive wounds. Despite the concerted efforts of the doctors and nurses, he passed away in the late hours of last night”, the statement explained.
Regarding the passing away of the student, the school authority established key details to include the student sustaining and injury to his abdominal region while on his way to the hostel; his last contact was with a friend at the old site of the campus, his last communication, at 8:01pm, was with the same known contact, informing her that he had not yet reached his hostel and he was found at the staff quarters at approximately 8:20pm, after the communication with the known contact.
The school also established that his personal effects, such as his phone, footwear, cap, and power bank, were discovered strewn along the road between the power sub-station and the staff quarters, and those who last saw him have provided accounts of his movements to assist management and the authorities in piecing together a timeline of events.
In a bid to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death, the school authority said that it is working closely with the police and intelligence team.
In the honour of the dead, the school has put on a hold on the ongoing examination, which will resume on Monday, January 27, 2025.
