Aliko Dangote’s renewed investment in Ogun State has reignited a long-standing dispute between Nigeria’s richest man and former Governor Ibikunle Amosun over an abandoned cement factory in Itori.
Speaking on Monday before Governor Dapo Abiodun in Abeokuta, Dangote recounted how his company was forced to halt operations in Ogun State after his cement factory was demolished twice under Amosun’s administration.
“When we resumed operations the second time, not only did they demolish the factory, but they also tore down the fence. So, we left,” Dangote stated. “But now, thanks to His Excellency, Governor Dapo Abiodun, we are back. You will be amazed at the progress we have made at the site.”
Dangote’s remarks swiftly drew a rebuttal from Amosun’s camp. In a statement issued by his media aide, Lanre Akinwale, the former governor’s office dismissed the allegations and challenged Dangote to provide proof.
“We urge Alhaji Dangote to present the necessary approvals he obtained for the structures he claims were demolished,” Akinwale stated.
The statement further questioned whether Dangote had secured the required government permits before commencing construction on the project.
“We refuse to be drawn into this obvious misrepresentation,” Akinwale added. “However, we advise Alhaji Dangote to disclose details of the land acquisition and relevant planning approvals so that a meaningful discussion can take place.”
Akinwale also noted that Dangote had previously commended Amosun for his role in facilitating the Ibese cement factory, one of Nigeria’s largest cement plants.
