In a major political shake-up, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, following a closed-door meeting held at the Government House in Asaba.
Governor Oborevwori’s switch comes just hours after his predecessor, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, also resigned from the PDP and declared allegiance to the APC. Okowa’s defection was revealed in a statement released earlier in the day by Senator James Manager on behalf of the former governor.
Manager stated that the decision was reached after extensive consultations with key political stakeholders and was driven by the need to prioritise Delta State’s long-term development.
“All PDP members in the state, including the governor, former Governor Okowa, the Speaker, the state party chairman, all the local government chairmen and others, have agreed to move to the APC. We cannot continue to be in a sinking boat,” Senator Manager said.
The mass exodus signals a significant realignment in Delta State’s political landscape, with virtually the entire PDP leadership structure shifting allegiance to the APC.
