Dr. Obadiah Mailafia, a former Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and critic of President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 64.
The President and Secretary of Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), Jonathan Asake and Luka Binniya confirmed that the deceased died this morning at National Hospital, Abuja.
He was said to have died of brief illness.
Mailafia was born on December 24, 1956 in a village of Randa, Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State in a Christian family of Pa Mailafia Gambo Galadima, an evangelist with the Evangelical Reformed Church of Central Nigeria (ERCC).
He attended Musha Sudan United Mission School from 1964 to 1969 for his primary school, Mada Hills Secondary School, Akwanga from 1970 to 1974 for his secondary school and School of Basic Studies (SBS) at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) between 1974 and 1975, for his A ‘Levels.
Mailafia attended ABU for his Degree programme and graduated in 1978 with B.Sc Honours Social Sciences degree (Politics, Economics and Sociology). He also earned M.Sc in the same institution. He ended his educational career at University of Oxford, United Kingdom, where he bagged DPil.
The deceased did his mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at Akoko Anglican Grammar School, Arigidi-Ikare, Ondo State, where he taught Government and Economics, after which he returned to ABU as Graduate Assistant. He also lectured at Plater College Oxford, New England College, Richmond Business School, the American International University in London and Regents Business School London.
He served as a chief economist in the Strategic Planning and Budgeting Department of the African Development Bank Group (AFDB) and Deputy Governor, CBN.
A Nigerian development economist, international polymath, central banker, statesman, was 2019 Presidential Candidate under African Democratic Congress (ADP).
