In response to the brutal mob lynching of northern travelers in Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered the immediate suspension of the Edo State Security Corps Commander, CP. Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), along with all unauthorized vigilante groups operating within the state.
The directive, announced in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, on Sunday, also included an official apology to the government and people of Kano State, where the victims reportedly originated. The governor expressed deep regret over the unlawful killings and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to justice and security.
According to the statement, the vigilante group involved in the tragic incident was not officially recognized by the state, as it had neither been profiled nor registered with the Edo State Security Corps. It emphasized that such acts of jungle justice contradict the values and principles of the Okpebholo administration and the mission of the security corps, as outlined in the Edo State Security Corps Governance Law.
Governor Okpebholo’s decision follows a review of preliminary findings related to the March 27, 2025, incident in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area. He condemned the extrajudicial actions and ordered the immediate dissolution of all illegal vigilante groups operating under any guise within Edo State.
Authorities have confirmed the arrest of 14 suspects linked to the lynching, with an ongoing manhunt for others involved. A special investigative team, under the directive of the Inspector General of Police, has been assigned to ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.
The Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to upholding the constitutional rights of all citizens, including freedom of movement and lawful business operations. Officials are actively engaging with the victims’ families, community leaders, and the Kano State Government to manage the fallout of the tragic event.
“We urge all parties to remain calm while investigations continue. The Edo State Government is dedicated to ensuring justice is served in a transparent and efficient manner,” the statement concluded.
