The Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), has declared the former governor of Kogi State wanted in connection with money laundering to the tune of N80,246,470,088.88.
EFCC, in its X handle, wrote, “Wanted by: Yahaya Bello.
The Commission arraigned the governor before a court today in absentia.
Shedding light on the development, Lagos State EFCC Spokesperson, Dele Oyawale said that the Commission has to declare the ex-governor wanted following the role played by Governor Ododo yesterday in preventing the men of the commission from arresting Bello in his house.
Oyawale said that declaring someone wanted implies that all the law enforcement agencies have now been put on red alert to ensure the arrest of the former governor.
He noted that “The commission has a valid order of a court and a warrant of arrest and enrollment order to declare the former governor wanted. As a very responsible anti-corruption agency, the EFCC will not come out and declare someone wanted if it doesn’t have legal authority to do that. We have the appropriate and requisite legal authority to declare him wanted. Every law enforcement agency will now ensure his arrest. When somebody is declared wanted, it becomes the responsibility of every law enforcement agency to ensure that the suspect is arrested. He will be arrested.
Regarding the court order the former governor has obtained restraining EFCC from arresting him, Oyawale stated, “There is another court order. We have a warrant of arrest, and we have an enrollment order. Whatever court order he may be relying upon has been overruled.”
