Ekiti State Government on Wednesday, April 29 2020, suspended one of the security men attached to the Fajuyi Pavilion, where the State’s Covid-19 Enforcement Taskforce uses as its base for coordination of daily operations.
This is in connection with a video the security man recorded where he was making a mockery of a father who had come to report his son, for violating the stay at home order.
In a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information, Muyiwa Olumilua, the action of the security man was strongly condemned by the state government and commended the father “for refusing to cover-up his son’s travel history and for denying him access into the house without confirming his COVID-19 status”.
The video, which was taken about four days ago, and was uploaded on social platforms, saw the man and his son answering questions from security officials. He said “I can’t stand the risk of COVID-19. I don’t want his case to be like that of the pregnant woman that threw the state into confusion”.
The man, Mr Femi Adeoye, a retired officer, had raised the alarm over his son’s recent travel history to Lagos and the need for him to self-isolate for 14-days elsewhere before gaining entrance into his house.
He said he repeatedly warned his son (Babafemi) not to travel to Lagos over the rising COVID-19 cases recorded in the state.
He also insisted that despite undergoing the COVID-19 test, his son can not stay in his house till he is certified free by the state government and the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NSDC).
But the security man recording the video, laughed at the man and insisted that the son should enter the car and follow the father or he will be arrested – a move which the father resisted.
While revealing that the erring officer has been suspended, Olumilua further stated that necessary action has been taking regarding the son saying:
“Following the encounter, the young man has been in the custody of the State for the past 4 days, and has since been taken to one of the designated quarantine centres, where he would be for 14 days, in line with laid down procedure that dictates that anyone who sneaks into the State, would be quarantined for fourteen (14) days, at their own cost.
“His samples will also be taken for testing in order to ensure he has not been infected in the course of his travels to high incidence areas of the country”.
Olumilua further stated, “We implore members of the public to emulate the patriotic zeal of Mr Adeoye, and promptly report to the Ekiti State Covid-19 Taskforce, any out-of-State traveler who sneaks into their neighbourhood, or places of abode. This is to safeguard against the likely health hazard that such returnees portend for the larger society.
