A lawyer, Joseph Nwaegbu of Pathfind Attorneys, on behalf of an organisation called Make Nigeria Better Initiative (MNBI), has filed a criminal complaint against prominent Lawyer and Human rights activist, Femi Falana to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
In the petition dated November 4, 2020, and addressed to the Office of Madame Fatou Bensouda, the Prosecutor, ICC, Falana was accused of allegedly instigating the #EndSARS crisis that led to the death of many Nigerians and destruction of property.
The group which also accused Falana of maintaining an antagonistic posture against Nigeria’s security forces, especially the military ever since the country returned to democracy, further stated that the role he played in the protest was not only ignoble but criminal.
Apart from asking the court to prosecute Falana and ask him to tender official apology to the families of those who lost their lives, the organisation is also asking that he should be made to pay $2,000,000,000 (Two Billion Dollars) as punitive damages.
The receipt of the petition was acknowledged by the ICC in a letter dated November 11, 2020.
Reacting to the petition, Falana, the criminal complaint lodged against him was sponsored by persons behind the killing of peaceful protesters demanding an end to police brutality and bad governance in Nigeria.
