The tragic death of Adetunji “Teejay” Opayele, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of Nigerian retail automation startup Bumpa, has ignited widespread public outrage.
His family and friends are demanding justice as the 30-year-old entrepreneur lost his life on March 4, 2025, following a devastating accident in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Teejay, a law graduate from Obafemi Awolowo University, played a crucial role in the founding of Bumpa in 2020 alongside co-founder Kelvin Umechukwu. Both co-founders met as students at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and would go on to build a number of businesses together.
It was gathered that Teejay was returning home from a workout at iFitness gym when he was involved in a fatal collision on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road. According to eyewitnesses, Biola Adams-Odutayo, the driver of a vehicle with the license plate LND *** JR, allegedly failed to yield while merging onto the busy road, striking Teejay, who was riding his power bike.
Despite wearing full protective gear, the impact left Teejay unconscious at the scene. Witness accounts indicate that Biola, a healthcare professional, refused to render aid, allegedly remaining on a phone call for over 30 minutes while neglecting to check on the injured victim. Shockingly, she was reported to have remarked that she did not want “blood to stain her car.”
Bystanders eventually rushed Opaleye to two different hospitals, both of which allegedly refused to admit him. After persistent efforts, the rescuers compelled Biola to accompany them to another medical facility to ensure he would receive treatment. However, tragically, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
In the aftermath of the accident, allegations have surfaced suggesting that Biola has leveraged her influence to evade accountability. She was initially detained but was later charged only with reckless driving and released on a one-million-Naira bail. Further fueling public anger, Biola reportedly failed to appear for a police summons on March 17, raising concerns of a potential cover-up.
Teejay’s grieving family is now demanding a fair and transparent legal process, calling for Biola to face manslaughter charges. They have appealed to the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, the Inspector General of Police, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to ensure justice is served without interference.
In response to the growing frustration, the #JusticeForTeejay campaign has gained momentum, with supporters urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The campaign is gathering evidence actively. It is also mobilizing public support through social media platforms such as Facebook, X, Threads, and Instagram at @justiceforteejay.
As the call for justice intensifies, Teejay’s loved ones remain steadfast in their pursuit of accountability, vowing not to rest until those responsible for his tragic death are held to account.
