The National Assembly Minority Caucus has condemned President Muhammadu Buhari for abandoning his duty at the critical moment his service is required to tackle the problem of insecurity in Nigeria, stressing that Buhari’s government has sufficiently demonstrated inaptitude and the inability to arrest the drift to anarchy of the country.
Addressing newsmen recently on behalf of his colleagues, the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe of the People Democratic Party (PDP) said, “the caucus has taken note of the fact that the president is absent from duty. We have not seen our president. We have not heard from our president despite the daily killings that are going on, which has turned Nigeria into a killing field of unimaginable proportion…We continue to take note of the constitutional breaches that is happening at this time by the government of APC and will at the appropriate time utilize all the constitutional method and measure available after consultation with our colleagues to do the needful to save the country from collapse”.
Abaribe expressed disappointment at the insincerity of the Buhari led administration at curbing the escalating security challenges in the country saying, “Sadly, and most unfortunately, from 2015 till date, rather than resolving the security situation, the APC led Federal Government had rather broadened the security challenges”.
He noted that the security problem which started in the North East of the country has now spread to every part of the country with terrorists, kidnappers and other criminals operating at liberty.
He said, “We, therefore, suggest that immediate steps should be taken by the government at all levels to set up proper security infrastructure whether in the mode of state police and another constitutional reforms to be able to address the drift of the nation”.
The Minority caucus further condemned the repressing attitude of President Buhari and members of his team saying, “So we condemned this attempt at holding everybody down and trying to shut us down and make sure that nobody says anything because they think by doing so the problem of the country will disappear. We say that the problem will not disappear. This is a time that needs the president to come out and take charge of his government and take us away from the problem that we are seeing today”.
The Group put it on notice to all Nigerians and international community about the threats to the lives of some legislators, who are courageous to be honest about the state of Nigeria, stressing that this threat comes in various forms including.
Furthermore, the caucus expressed very strong reservation about the economic strategies of the government which has culminated into what is called quantitative easing, otherwise known as printing money.
“And we feel that this strategy has led us to the very high inflation that we have today, devaluation of our naira to height that we never expected and it has also concomitantly brought out unemployment and it has also led the government to contemplate as we see it today to raise the price of fuel, electricity tariffs and all manners of charges on the hapless Nigerians public. We think the government should reverse itself and should not continue in its mindless borrowing without seeing any benefit that are coming from it”, they added.
