The Federal Government has officially converted the Gombe State government-owned General Hospital in Kumo into a Federal Medical Centre (FMC), making it the second federal medical institution in the state.
The upgrade of the facility, now known as Kumo Federal Medical Centre, follows a request by Gombe State Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya for its takeover.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the request in response to the region’s poor maternal and neonatal mortality indices and other pressing health concerns in the state.
The new FMC in Kumo is expected to function as a tertiary healthcare institution, playing a crucial role in improving healthcare services and contributing to the training of medical personnel in Gombe State and the Northeast region at large.
Before this development, the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe was the only federal healthcare facility in the state. Notably, it had also started as a medical centre before being upgraded to its current status.
The Federal Government acknowledged the commitment of the Gombe State Government to strengthening its healthcare sector, a move that aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to introduce comprehensive reforms in the health sector.
Tinubu commended Governor Yahaya for his dedication to the welfare of the state’s citizens and noted that the takeover of the hospital would significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the region.
