The Federal Government has officially adopted the Ogun State owned Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, as a federal institution, making it the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East senatorial district.
Established in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, TASUED is Nigeria’s first specialised university of education. Named after the late Dr Tai Solarin, a renowned educationist and activist, the institution has been a key player in teacher training and academic excellence in the country.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the transition on Friday, March 7, 2025, expressing gratitude to the Ogun State Government for facilitating the move.
He described the adoption as a tribute to two historic education icons—Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the pioneer of free education in Western Nigeria, and Dr Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating young Nigerians and instilling patriotism at Mayflower School, Ikenne.
“It is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr Tai Solarin for their contributions to education,” President Tinubu stated.
He also acknowledged the role of the Awujale of Ijebuland in ensuring the university remained operational despite challenges in 2012.
TASUED’s transition to a federal institution aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance teacher education and improve instructional quality across Nigeria.
The institution joins six other federal universities of education, including Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri; Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo; and Federal University of Education, Kano, among others.
With well-developed infrastructure and academic programs, the Federal Government anticipates minimal financial investment in the transition process.
The move is expected to strengthen TASUED’s role in producing highly skilled educators and contributing to national educational development.
