The Federal Government has confirmed the receipt of over three hundred and eleven million dollars of Late General Sani Abacha’s assets repatriated from the United States and the Bailiwick of Jersey.
This was confirmed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami and contained in a press statement issued by the Minister’s Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations Dr Umar Jibrilu Gwandu.
The statement stated that the litigation process for the recovery of these assets titled “Abacha III” consolidated on the established record of the administration which had a history of recovery of $322m from Switzerland in 2018.
Malami, who led the negotiation team, noted that the Tripartite Agreement and the process towards the implementation, represented a major watershed in International Asset Recovery and Repatriation to provide benefit to the victims of corruption.
He stated that the assets would support and assist in expediting the construction of three major infrastructure projects across the country such as the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, the Abuja – Kano Road, and the Second Niger Bridge.
According to the statement, Nigeria is in the process of establishing a Project Monitoring Team to oversee the implementation of the projects and report regularly on progress made to the public.
Malami further assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would ensure that the returned assets are transparently managed.
