Following the agreement between the Federal Government and major organised Labour Unions in Nigeria, the latter has suspended the recently hike in electricity tariff for two weeks.
It will be recalled that on September 1, 2020, all the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) in Nigeria increased their electricity tariff by 151 per cent. The increment which was approved by the Federal Government will be carried out every six month till 2025, when a new table of review would be out.
In an Order No. NERC/209/2020, signed by the Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), James A. Momoh and Commissioner, Legal, Licensing and Compliance, Dafe CAkpeneye, the Commission stated, “This regulatory instrument may be cited as NERC Order on Suspension of the MULTI YEAR TARIFF ORDER (MYTO) 2020 for the Electricity Distribution Licensees”.
According to the document, the suspension of the hike in electricity tariff “shall take effect from 28h September 2020 and shall cease to have effect on the 11th October 2020”.
“The Commission hereby suspends for a period of 14-days, with effect from 28 September 2020 to 11 October 2020, the MULTI YEAR TARIFF ORDER 2020 that was issued to the following Dis Cos”, it added.
