The Nigerian Government has raised alarm over a plan by South Africans to attack foreigners living in their country.
According to a statement, which emanated from the High Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in South Africa, dated August 24, 2022, the Nigerian government warned Nigerians living in South Africa to be careful so as not to fall victim to the impending xenophobic attack.
The High Commission hinged their alarm on the recently made known determination of the proponents of Operation Dudula to attack foreigners and to eject them from South Africa.
Operation Dudula is a Pro-South African patriotic Organisation established in Soweto, a township of Johannesburg but has since spread to other parts of the country. “Dudula” means to “force out” or “knock down” in isiZulu, and refers to the movement’s goal to expel immigrants. It has been described as a xenophobic vigilante organization.
The statement titled, “Advisory to Nigerians in South Africa”, reads:
“This is to advise Nigerians living in South Africa to be vigilant and exercise caution in their activities due to the recent utterances of the proponents of Operation Dudula and their threats to attack foreign nationals in this country.
“The Group, through public notice and video clips circulated on the social media has informed of plans to march against foreign migrants in South Africa starting from the 2nd of September, 2022 and specifically on foreign business owners, shops and undocumented foreign nationals.
“Nigerians residents in South Africa are hereby advised to exercise caution and be watchful in carrying out their day-to-day activities.”
