Nigerian focal journalist, activist and Managing Director of Ibadan based Agidigbo 88.7FM, Oriyomi Hamzat, has confirmed his arrest by the Nigeria Police Force, saying that he has been detained at the Force Intelligence Bureau, (FIB), Abuja.
In a trending video, Hamzat claimed that he was arrested over his clamouring for justice for late Timothy Adegoke, a postgraduate student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, running Master Business Administration (MBA).
It would be recalled that Adegoke was allegedly murdered at Rahmon Adedoyin’s Hilton Hotel and Resort, Ile Ife and to that effect, Adedoyin along with his six staff: Magdalene Chiefuna, Adeniyi Aderogba, Oluwale Lawrence, Oyetunde Kazeem, Adebayo Kunle and Adedeji Adesola are standing trial at Osun State High Court, Osogbo.
They are arraigned on 11- count charge bordering on conspiracy, murder, tampering with corpse, altering of receipt and administration of extrajudicial oath, among others.
Speaking from FBI’s Office in Abuja, Hamzat said that he had to do a video clip so that he could tell Nigerians and the international community where he is currently, saying that Nigeria Police Force should be held responsible if anything happens to him.
He noted that he did not trust the police because he could be killed through food poison or chemical poison, vowing that if released, he would not stop seeking justice for the late Adegoke.
PrimeStarNews learnt that the State Intelligence Bureau of the Nigeria Police, Eleyele had in a letter dated Monday, May 23 invited Hamzat to be at the office on Tuesday, May 24 at 11 am.
The letter reads, “You are cordially invited to interface with the Officer in Charge of the State Intelligence Bureau, State Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan on Tuesday 24th May, 2022 at 11a.m.
“Venue: State Intelligence Bureau, Eleyele, Ibadan. Accept the warmest assurances of the Bureau best regards, please.”
It was signed by CSP Peter Ajogwu, the officer in charge of the SIB in Oyo State.
Upon honouring the invitation, Hamza was arrested and handed over to officials of the FIB who transported him to Abuja on Thursday morning.
It was gathered that the arrest was in connection with a petition by the Chairman of Hilton Hotel and Resort, Rahmon Adedoyin who is currently standing trial along with six employees of his hotel, Hilton Hotels, over the alleged murder of a postgraduate student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Timothy Adegoke.
Adedoyin petitioned the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, alleging defamation, false alarm, incitement and unlawful interference with the police investigation and judicial proceedings.
The petition was addressed to the DIG, Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Area 10, Garki, FCT, Abuja; it also copied the Department of State Services (DSS), Osun State Chief Judge, Justice Oyebola Ojo and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Adedoyin in his letter through his lawyer, Ahmed Aderoju, complained of criminal defamation, false alarm, incitement, false publication, cyberstalking and criminal threat against him by Hamzat, and others including Babagbade Imo, Woibile and IJKFMB Music yard.
However, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, has revealed that the popular broadcaster was arrested after he ignored multiple invitations sent to him.
The statement read: “The popular Ibadan-based broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat, was arrested in ibadan today by our Force Intelligence Bureau operatives in connection with a case of Cyber Bullying under investigation.
“Oriyomi’s arrest was sequel to his refusal to honour Police invitation severally, which prompted the police to secure a warrant for his arrest.
“We are looking into the petition written against him on his violation of the Cyber Crime Act, 2015, and necessary action will be taken to do justice in the matter.”
