The first Nigerian female Vice Chancellor at the University of Benin, Edo State, Prof. Grace Alele-Williams, has died at the age of 89.
She was born in Warri, Delta State and attended Government School, Warri and Queen’s College, Lagos, where she had her primary and secondary education.
Alele-Williams, a professor of mathematics and the first Nigerian woman to receive a doctorate, was appointed the vice-chancellor of the University of Benin in 1985 and ended her tenure in 1992.
The deceased obtained a master’s degree in mathematics while teaching at Queen’s School, Ede in Osun State in 1957 and PhD degree in mathematics education at the University of Chicago (U.S.) in 1963.
After the completion of her PhD, she and joined the University of Ibadan (UI), before moving to the University of Lagos in 1965, where she was appointed a professor of Mathematics.
She married Babatunde Abraham Williams, a political scientist and their union was blessed with five children and over 10 grandchildren.
