In a remarkable turn of events at the 9th Convocation Ceremony of the Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), 19-year-old Jumoke Deborah Olatunji, a 100-level student of Linguistics and Language, was named the new face of the institution. Her inspiring journey of resilience, determination, and academic excellence has earned her this prestigious recognition.
Olatunji, a native of Igbara Odo, Ekiti State, has faced numerous challenges due to her small stature, yet she remains undeterred in her pursuit of success. Despite being the eldest among her siblings, she grew up witnessing her younger ones surpass her in height. Initially, she struggled with self-doubt but later embraced her uniqueness, drawing strength from her unwavering faith in God.
Recalling her childhood, Olatunji shared that she once felt ashamed of her size during her primary school days but has since grown into a confident young woman determined to make a difference. She emphasized that she does not allow people to cheat her, standing firm in her convictions.
Olatunji’s dedication to education remains her top priority. “Education means a lot to me. It is the best legacy. With my university certificate, I can be whatever I want to be,” she said. Initially aspiring to study Theatre Arts, she later fell in love with Linguistics, recognizing its broad applications and career prospects.
Her first day at FUOYE was met with curiosity from her peers, with some taking photographs and sharing them on the department’s WhatsApp platform. However, her coursemates soon rallied around her, offering support and friendship. A lecturer even emphasized in class that she must be treated with respect and dignity, reinforcing FUOYE’s inclusive culture.
Olatunji’s story took a heartwarming turn when Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of FUOYE’s Governing Council, publicly acknowledged her resilience during the convocation ceremony. He announced that the university would take full responsibility for her education, ensuring financial constraints would not hinder her academic journey.

“Jumoke Deborah Olatunji embodies the spirit of resilience and excellence that we strive to instill in every student at FUOYE. Her story is a reminder that greatness is not determined by physical stature but by the strength of character and determination,” Senator Ndoma-Egba stated.
Olatunji’s appointment as FUOYE’s new face is expected to inspire many students, proving that perseverance and self-belief are the true markers of success. As she continues her studies, she remains steadfast in her goal of becoming a role model for others, urging those who struggle with self-doubt to embrace their uniqueness and believe in their potential.
Beyond academics, Olatunji has a passion for teaching and spends her breaks working as a primary school teacher in Ibadan, where her pupils adore her. She sees herself as a person carefully created by God and is determined to leave a positive impact on the world.
Her story serves as a beacon of hope, reminding students and society at large that challenges should not define a person’s potential. With FUOYE’s support and her own unyielding spirit, Jumoke Olatunji continues to break barriers, proving that resilience and purpose can pave the way for extraordinary achievements.
