There are strong indications that the G-5 governors, who are members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may adopt Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) as their presidential candidate.
The G-5 governors are governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State, Samuel Ortom Benue State, and Ifeanyi Ugwanyi of Enugu State.
One of the indications that Obi is the preferred candidate for the G-5 was revealed recently when Ortom public urged Nigerians to vote for the presidential candidate.
He said this on Sunday, December 25, 2022, when Obi paid him a visit in his Benue State office before proceeding to the IDP Camp in the state to spend Christmas with the residents of the camp displaced by terrorists from their different homes in the North.
After the PDP primary in May this year and Atiku Abubakar becomes the party’s flag bearer, the G-5 demanded for the replacement of the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu with a southerner to correct the regional imbalance.
They argue that it is morally and politically incorrect for the North to produce the party’s presidential candidate and still maintain the office of the national chairman.
Ortom said, “I am still telling Nigerians that this is a man that can help deliver this country from the challenges we have today.”
His words, “For me as a Christian, I have nothing to say than to say God will bless you. God will bless your ambition. God will bless whatever aspiration you have, the aspiration to be the president of this country. My prayer is that God will bless you.”
“And to reiterate my earlier comment which I said, because I have seen capacity, I have seen faith and hope and I have seen someone that can bring the required of justice, equity and fairness that some of us have been pursuing since I become a governor in 2015. If I were not in PDP, I would have been following you all over the place to canvass votes for you. I am still telling Nigerians that this is a man that can help deliver this country from the challenges we have today.”
However, it has been gathered that PDP will expel the five governors if they declare their support and endorsement for Obi.
