The Tangale community in Gombe State has declared a 14-day mourning period to honour the victims of the tragic Easter Monday incident in Billiri, during which a trailer ploughed into Christian worshippers on procession, killing five and injuring at least 21 others. In addition, a three-day fasting and prayer exercise will commence as the community seeks divine intervention and healing.
The fatal incident occurred along the Gombe–Yola Federal Highway in Billiri Local Government Area, where eyewitnesses reported that a trailer transporting grains rammed into a large Easter procession, allegedly without any warning signal.
Confirming the incident, the Gombe State Police Command stated that the accident resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. State Governor Inuwa Yahaya has ordered a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event.
In response, the Tangale Community Development Association (TCDA), in collaboration with the Kwagam Tangale Socio-Cultural Association and Tangale Community Overseas, held a joint press conference urging restraint and unity amid grief and growing tensions. The community also called for the immediate release of several of its members arrested in the aftermath of the tragedy.
National President of the TCDA, Danladi Bako, who addressed journalists during the press conference, expressed the community’s anguish over the loss and conveyed key resolutions from their emergency meeting.
“To this end, we are calling on all Tangale sons and daughters to suspend all forms of celebration and merriment during this mourning period. Furthermore, we request that all Tangale people, both at home and in the diaspora, observe three days of prayer and fasting starting this Friday, seeking divine intervention in the affairs of Tangale,” he said.
Bako criticised the response of authorities and questioned the official narrative provided by police. He refuted claims that the truck lost control due to brake failure, citing video evidence showing that the vehicle approached the crowd from behind at speed, without using a horn, before ramming into them. He also claimed the truck came to a halt on the road, rather than veering off uncontrollably.
He alleged that no Muslims were among the victims, contrary to initial police statements, and cautioned against attempts to spark religious division. “The victims were all part of the Christian procession. Photographs and video footage clearly depict what transpired,” he added.
He further criticised the police for their absence during the well-known annual event, despite being informed in advance. “Why was there no traffic control? Why did both the state and zonal police issue statements about mechanical failure before any investigation was conducted?” he queried.
According to Bako, after the collision, the trailer driver fled towards police officers, who allegedly shielded him and left the scene without offering assistance to victims. “Some were still trapped beneath the vehicle while officers secured the driver,” he said.
He also raised concerns about the initial lack of emergency medical care. Victims were taken to the General Hospital in Billiri, where there were no staff or supplies available at the time, he claimed, despite later government promises to cover hospital and funeral expenses.
In a renewed appeal for safety, Mr Bako called on the Federal Government to restore speed bumps along the Gombe-Yola Highway through Billiri to protect pedestrians, particularly during large public events.
Police Investigation and Charges
In an update released Thursday, the Gombe State Police Command confirmed that investigations into the crash had been concluded. Police spokesperson DSP Buhari Abdullari, speaking on behalf of CP Bello Yahaya, announced that the driver, 28-year-old Usman Muhammed of Afghanistan Quarters, had been charged with inconsiderate and dangerous driving resulting in death.
The case has now been referred for prosecution.
“We extend our appreciation to all members of the public who provided information and support during the investigation,” DSP Buhari said, adding that any further relevant details could be directed to the State Motor Traffic Department.
As Billiri mourns its dead, the Tangale community stands united in grief and determination, calling for justice, accountability, and peace.
