Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged the chairmen of local government and local community development areas (LCDAs) in the state to be accountable and transparent in the discharge of their duties to the people at the grassroots level.
The State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Chief Bayo Lawal made this admonition at Ibadan while holding the inaugural meeting with the council bosses.
According to him, the meeting was to officially familiarise with the caretaker chairmen and for them to be acquainted and counselled on some issues that might deter their smooth operations at the local level, adding that the outcome of the meeting would help them to have a strong grasp of the workings of the local government system.
He urged them to face their work squarely and ensure they use the little funds given to them judiciously for the development of the grassroots and be conscious of the fact that they are the closest to the grassroots.
Lawal ordered them to replicate the state policies and programmes in the areas of education, primary healthcare, and social infrastructures among others.
The Commissioner stressed that the Ministry of Local Government and chieftaincy Matters would commence inspection to councils and LCDAs in the state to monitor their activities, adding that the exercise was not aimed at witch-hunt anybody but to ensure effective and judicious administration.
Lawal said the state administration has shown enough commitment that it would do whatever necessary to improve the welfare of the people living in the rural areas to make possible, a decrease in poverty level and make life meaning for all.
