Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Wednesday May 6, 2020 flagged off the distribution of palliatives to 90,000 poorest of the poor households and 30,000 vulnerable households to cushion the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Flagging off the scheme at Igboora in Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oke Ogun, Engineer Makinde assured that he would do his best for the vulnerable at this trying moment.
He maintained that the state government decided to distribute palliatives to assist people “whose means of income have been badly affected” by the partial shutdown of activities in the state.
Makinde said he is distributing the palliatives on non-partisan basis stressing that he is the governor of the state not of a political party.
He said, “People have come to me and said that I should allow the leadership of the party to distribute the materials but I say no. I said this has nothing to do with party affiliation but what is important is that the materials gets to those that it is aimed at. I want the traditional rulers of each community to be involved and ensure that it is well distributed”.
The Governor added, “On our way to Igbo-Ora, we stopped at the Directorate of Vocational Skills and Entrepreneurship Studies at the Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa, where Adire (tie and dye), bed sheets, and face masks are being produced”.
Makinde also noted that Model Primary Health Care Centre, Oja Oba, Igbo-Ora has been converted into coronavirus isolation centre adding, “We also visited the Model Primary Health Care Centre, Oja Oba, Igbo-Ora which will be converted to an isolation centre. The centre has the capacity to take 40 beds”.
