As part of activities to commemorate its 3rd year of operations, the Graduate Research Clinic (GRC) – an online multidisciplinary platform of graduate students and academics/research professionals in Africa and the African Diaspora is convening a Roundtable on Higher Education in Africa, themed: ‘Reimagining Higher Education in Africa – The Role of Learned Communities and Professional Associations’.
This is contained in a statement signed by Tobi Adewunmi on behalf of the GRC Team.
This Roundtable is considered imperative and timely, especially now that a consensus has arisen among African scholars and other stakeholders of Higher Education in Africa, on the need to birth a paradigm shift in the discourse on Higher Education in Africa and restore the long-lost culture of open and critical debates on Higher Education Reforms, as well as other important issues that significantly affect our collective imaginations of educational advancement and innovation in the Higher education sector.
At the Roundtable, a keynote lecture titled, ‘The Nature of State, National Ideology, Modelling and Practice of Higher Education in Nigeria’, will be delivered by Prof. Francis Egbokhare, FNAL, a Professor of Linguistics and African Languages at the University of Ibadan, and President of the Nigerian Academy of Letters.
The Roundtable will be chaired by Prof. Tunji Olaopa, NPOM, retired Federal Permanent Secretary and former Special Adviser to Prof. Tunde Adeniran, a former Minister of Education, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Also expected to feature as guest discussants at the Roundtable are Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, FHSN, MNAL, the immediate past Vice Chancellor of Kwararafa University, Wukari, Taraba, and Secretary-General of the Committee of Vice-chancellors/Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, as well as Prof. Moses Ochonu, the Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of History, Vanderbilt University, Tennessee, United States.
The event will be hosted virtually via Zoom, on Sunday, 28th February, 2021, by 5pm prompt.
A communique is expected to be issued after the Roundtable to help inform policy reforms in Nigeria’s Higher Education sector.
