The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday, February 24, 2023, announced the suspension of the Enugu East senatorial election, which was to hold on Saturday.
This came about following the assassination of the candidate of the Labour Party candidate for the election, Oyibo Chukwu.
INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, made this known during a media briefing at the national collation centre in Abuja.
The Election would now hold alongside the governorship polls on March 11.
Yakubu said the postponement in the district which covers six local government areas became necessary with the murder of the Labour Party (LP)’s senatorial candidate for the district, Oyibo Chukwu.
He said the Labour Party reached out to the electoral body to convey its intention to provide a replacement and go ahead with the poll at the new date.
Chukwu was killed and set ablaze at Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Government Area on Wednesday after gunmen opened fire on his convoy killing him and five others in the vehicle with him.
