In a bid to enhance fish farming production, the Kebbi State Government has inaugurated a committee on fisheries management and development.
The Commissioner for Animal Health Husbandry and Fisheries, Alhaji Aminu Dangida, who disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting in Birnin Kebbi said the state was blessed with necessary potential that were needed for fish development and production.
According to him, “The aim of setting up the committee is to find a lasting solution to the myriad of fisheries problems we have in the state. The state is linked with fisheries resources at River Niger with traverses of 264.29 kilometres, River Rima, 162.20 kilometers, River Zamfara with distance of 100.57 kilometers and River Shalla with 80.75 kilometres traverses, among others. The state is the second state in terms of fresh water and fisheries resources in Nigeria”.
Lamenting lack of proper fisheries management plan, illegal fishing, fish fencing and grass cutting practices as the reasons for underutilisation of the resources, Dangida said, “The state government under the leadership of Gov. Atiku Bagudu, is committed to reviving the sector as in 2019 fisheries experts were invited to address the problems affecting the field”.
