A foremost Labour Activist and a former chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Lagos state chapter, Comrade Ayodele Akele, has died.
Akele, who was a former Secretary-General of the National Conscience Party (NCP), the party founded by the late Gani Fawehinmi died in the early hours of Tuesday after a protracted illness.
Confirming the incidence, the President of Rights Monitoring Group, Olufemi Aduwo, wrote on Twitter, “It is with deep pain in my heart to disclose the sad news I have just heard! Comrade Ayodele Akele passed on today, 23/6/2020. Itu devoted his entire life to the service of ordinary people. A former Secretary General of national association of Nigerian students, committed and incorruptible trade union leader, agitator, mobiliser, popularly called “Ata wewe”, Ituriti ,one of very few Gani Fawehimi devouted apostles, may your soul rest in perfect peace! ITURITI,the struggle continue Mibroda. Good night”.
Femi Aborisade, Legal Practitioner and Activist, also wrote, “Demise of an uncompromising class fighter: It is with deep pain in my heart to disclose the sad news I have just heard! My friend and comrade, Ayodele Akele, passed on today. Itu devoted his entire life to the service of ordinary people. We shall never forget you. Adieu!”
It could be recalled that Comrade Akele was dismissed by the Lagos State government under the Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s adminstration for leading workers’ strike by providing a functional and pro-workers leadership.
