The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Mudashiru Obasa, today, was impeached by 32 members of the Assembly and replaced with his deputy, Hon Mojisola Meranda.
Hon MMojisola Meranda becomes the first female speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Also, the Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Fatai Mojeed was elected as Deputy Speaker.
The impeachment of the ex-speaker was premised on corruption and financial recklessness. It was gathered that the embattled legislators was impeached for gross misconduct and abuse of office.
Obasa has been accused of spending N17 billion on a gate to the Assembly complex, which critics argue is excessive and fraudulent. There have also been allegations of mishandling constituency funds and projects.
A source from the Assembly, who revealed that the ex-speaker was removed by lawmakers during a plenary session, said, “Obasa is impeached and the deputy speaker, Mojisola Meranda elected speaker. Mojeed Fatai is the Deputy speaker.”
