Super Eagles defender, Leon Balogun, has joined Scottish side Rangers on a one-year deal.
Balogun joined Rangers after a six-month stint at Championship side Wigan which he joined from Premier League club, Brighton.
The 32-year-old was unveiled by Rangers on Friday, July 24, 2020, and manager Steven Gerrard believes that the Nigerian’s experience in the Premier League will be beneficial to his side.
“I am pleased to secure the signature of Leon. He is an experienced centre half who will add strength and depth to our squad,” Gerrard said in a club statement on the Rangers’ official website.
“His experience in the Premier League as well as his international pedigree strengthens our squad and will assist in the development of our young defenders.”
Leon Balogun’s deal is for a year while the club has an option to extend for another year (Rangers)
“Leon has just finished a round of competitive fixtures with Wigan so will hit the ground running. He’s a positive and bright character and we are looking forward to his influence around the group.”
The deal is for a year while Rangers have the option for a further year.
This move brings to an end Balogun’s two-year stay in England.
He first joined Brighton in May 2018 but struggled for regular football before he joined Wigan on loan and later on a short-term contract to enable him to finish the 2019/2020 season which had been interrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Nigeria international started his career in Germany where he played for a series of clubs including Werder Bremen and Mainz before his move to England.
