The children of the recently deceased Nollywood Veteran Yoruba comedian, Kunle Makinde Adetokunbo, popularly called Dejo Tunfulu and his colleague, Rammy Shita Bay have accused the medical personnel of the General Hospital, Ikorodu, Lagos State of negligence, claiming that they were responsible for his death.
The family members of Tunfulu and his colleagues hold that if the medical personnel of the government hospital have been diligent in treating the deceased, he would have survived his sickness.
Shita Bay expressed his disappointment over the ways medical practitioners in the government hospitals are lackadaisical about their duties, stressing we have big problem in Nigeria.
He said, “God needs to help us in Nigeria. We have problem. Medically, we have problem. At the emergency unit of General Hospital, Ikorodu, six people died in succession within the few hours that we were there. One after the other, they were just packing corpses as if they were not humans. At a point I asked what they were packing and covering up and I was told patients who have just dead. I was scared. Government medical practitioners don’t value lives at all. Whenever a sick person is brought to emergency unit, they will just abandon the patient and be doing something else as if they are waiting for the patient to die. I think they have this posture to the patients because they are not their family members and if they die, they cannot be affected. I am disappointed in general hospital for medical negligence. At a point, one of the deceased children was fighting the medical personnel for abandoning the father for over 30 minutes.”
The veteran actor added that what is happening in General Hospital is a reflection of Nigeria’s system, pointing out that if the nation’s government value life, the terrorists would have been dealt with.
Shedding light on how the father died, the deceased second born said, “My father was fine and he did not show any sign of illness before his sudden death. This is how he spent his last three days on earth. On Tuesday March 29, 2022, he went for the birthday of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. On Wednesday, he went to location to shoot a movie. He came in the evening and parked his car with a mechanic and came home. At home, he said he wanted to eat fish and he went out with okada to buy it. When he came, he said he wanted to prepare it by himself, so that it can give him a particular taste he desired. He went to the kitchen and cooked it. He said he wanted to eat Amala and we prepared it for him. He ate it and went into his bedroom and slept.
“I went to my room to sleep too but not quite so long, I was called to come and see daddy. When I got there, I realised that he has been paralysed. I asked him what the problem is but he could not raise any part of his body. He was not talking. I asked the person that woke me up what the problem was. He said he did not known and later said that maybe there was no food in him because he has vomited the food he ate. I prepared (ogi) pap for him and he vomited it too. At this point, we had to rush him to General Hospital, Ikorodu. He was not talking again. We forced fed him. The problem started around 2am. We called the mechanic where he parked his car to bring his car which we used to take him to his private hospital. His private hospital rejected him and asked us to take him to general hospital, which we did. In the morning, his left side was not functioning again. We were thinking of stroke but later we were told that he lacked blood in his system. We arranged for blood for him and they administered it on him. After getting the blood, he felt better and he started talking. Then he asked me why I was fighting with the doctor and I replied him that I fought the doctor because they did not want me to attend to him. He asked me not to fight the doctor again. I then told him that the doctor said that he still has to collect another pint of blood and that after that, we he would be discharged to go home. He told me that he was having headache. At this point, I left him and went into the car so that the doctor could continue to do his work.
“I later peeped through the widow and found out that he was not breathing well and I called the attention of the doctor to it and asked him to help me pay attention to him. The doctor was fighting me saying that I could not teach him his work. I was talking to him from the window because they have locked the door of where they put him. Not long, I felt I should still check on him. I peeped again through the widow and I found out that my father was no longer breathing. I told the doctor that my father was not breathing again and they were pressing his chest. I had to go in and I told them that they killed my father because they failed to attend to him properly. That was how my father died”.
