The arrest of the publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, for leading a protest in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja is currently generating controversies, as Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), mounts pressure on the Federal Government to ensure the release of the activist within 48 hours.
Sowore, who had earlier urged Nigerians to hold a crossover protest across the country on the New Year eve by picking up a candle and a placard showing their grievances against the President Muhammadu Buhari administration was arrested with some activists at the #CrossoverWithProtest.
While Apostle Biafra in his twitter page urged Sowore to stop fighting for one Nigeria but fight for end Nigeria, Chigozirim Emeakayi said, “The first idiot of the year 2021 goes to Omoyele Sowore!”
Quidus advised Sowore to stop constituting nuisance else he would rot in jail.
However, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has given the Nigerian government 48 hours to release Sowore and other arrested over the protest, threatening that failure to do that, it would take Buhari-led government to court.
SERAP said, “Nigerian authorities must immediately and unconditionally release Omoyele Sowore & other activists reportedly arrested and tortured during a peaceful protest last night in Abuja. We’ll take legal/international action if Sowore & others are not released within 48 hours”.
