The Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL), holds its 22nd and 23rd combined convocation and investiture of new Fellows on Thursday August 12, 2021.
The programme, with the theme, “What is it to be human?”, will take place at J. F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium, University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos. Professor Olu Obafemi is billed to deliver the convocation lecture titled, “Descent from Humanism: Music, Literature and the Media”.
According to the information gathered from the national academy, 13 scholars will be conferred with Regular Fellows, two Overseas Fellows and one Honorary Fellow.
The Regular Fellows are: Professors Abayomi O. Akinyeye, Andrew Haruna, Imelda Icheji Lawrence Udoh, Olusegun Adesina Adekoya, Justice Obi Joseph Nwachukwu-Agbada, Mabel Itohanosa Erioyunvwen Evwierhoma, David Roger Jowitt, Ahmed Parker Yerima, Adebola Babatunde Ekanola, Frank Maduabuchi Dukor, Olayemi Durotimi Akinwumi, Lateef Babatunde Ayeleru and Isidore Okeawolam Diala.
Overseas Fellows are: Professors Tanure Ojaide and Simeon Olusegun Ilesanmi, and Honorary Fellow is: Most Reverend, Bishop Dr Mathew Hassan Kukah
The event will feature three scientific sessions scheduled to hold between 3 to 6pm.
The speakers of the scientific session are: Professor Lai Oso, School of Communication, Lagos State University – “Media Reportage of crime, conflict and violence: Dehumanising Humanity”, Professor Jim Unah, Department of Philosophy, University of Lagos – “The Oxymoronic Rhetoric of Humans Being Asked to be Human” and Professor Alex Asigbo, Department of Theatre and Film Studies, Nnamdi Azikwe University, Akwa – “Rediscovering Our Humanity in an Age of Terror and Globalisation: The Role of the Arts”.
The Foundation Fellows of the Association are: Professor Emeritus Ayo Bamgbose, Professor Chinua Achebe, Professor Emeritus J. F. Ade-Ajayi, Professor Emeritus Adeboye Babalola, Professor J. P. Clark-Bekederemo and Professor Emeritus Wole Soyinka.
