The Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Prof. Fatima Waziri–Azi has revealed that Nigeria received 490,797 cyber-tip reports from 2021 to April 2024 regarding cases of Child Sexual Abuse Materials (CSAM) and sextortion in Nigeria.
Expressing concern over this phenomenon, Waziri-Azi said, ” In 2023, 23.5% of the global sextortion reports were from Nigeria, with 6,100 out of 26,400 cases.”
Noting that NAPTIP is dedicated to protecting children and prosecuting offenders, the DG highlighted the urgent need for a targeted awareness campaign on Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (OCSEA) and sextortion, emphasising better investigation and prosecution.
