The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘C’, Owerri, has called on traders and stakeholders to comply with trade regulations to enhance economic growth and support national development.
This appeal was made by the Unit Controller, Comptroller Bishir Balogun, during his inaugural press briefing held on Thursday, April 17, 2025.
The briefing spotlighted the Unit’s achievements in its anti-smuggling operations just weeks after he assumed office.
Since taking over leadership on March 20, 2025, Comptroller Balogun revealed that the Unit has recorded significant seizures of contraband with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) exceeding ₦1 billion. In addition, the Unit recovered over ₦13.4 million through the issuance of Demand Notices on under-declared goods.
Describing smuggling as a form of economic sabotage, Comptroller Balogun emphasised its detrimental impact on local industries, public health, and national security.

Among the seized items were 725 bales of second-hand clothing, 2,762 rolls of satin fabric, 2,589 used tyres, 233 sacks of foreign parboiled rice, petroleum products, and 25 bales of cannabis sativa. Several trucks used in the conveyance of the contraband were also intercepted.
“These seizures are a testament to our intelligence-led operations and the dedication of our officers in plugging revenue leakages and ensuring trade compliance,” Balogun stated.
He praised the professionalism and resilience of his personnel, noting that their commitment reflects the reform-driven vision of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi.
Reaffirming the need for stakeholder collaboration, Comptroller Balogun urged traders to strictly follow customs regulations, adding, “Our officers are well-trained to facilitate legitimate trade while clamping down on defaulters.”
He also announced that portions of the seized cannabis sativa would be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) as part of ongoing inter-agency collaboration to combat illicit activities.
Appreciating the media for their support, Balogun appealed for continued partnership in raising public awareness against smuggling. He further encouraged the public to provide credible intelligence that can aid the Service in its mission to protect the nation’s economy.
